Principal’s update for parents 4.5.21

Dear Parents and carers,

I would like to provide you all with an update on our work so far and share information around plans to move Woodfield School towards excellence. The movement into Springtime after Easter, the awakening of nature, and the positive changes we are seeing in terms of control of the pandemic mirrors the many new things that are happening in school to improve the quality of education we deliver for our young people.

As many of you will know we were recently visited by HMI to quality assure the education we are providing currently and to follow up on concerns raised in our last inspection.  The Ofsted letter is on their website and the schools’ and I am pleased to report that ‘Leaders and those responsible for governance are taking effective action to provide education in the current circumstances.’

We have been working hard to develop a positive relationships policy which will be launched across all sites on the 10th of May (a copy can be found on our website after this date).  The policy has been developed using the ‘thrive’ approach which has been highly successful in our primary setting.  The policy aims to consistently develop the emotional literacy of our young people, and help them to understand behaviours that affect learning. Very clear systems to support our pupils to regulate themselves are built into the policy, with consistent guidelines for our staff when faced with challenging behaviours.

We have launched the Woodfield core principles of; Effort, Respect, Ambition (ERA).  They help to underpin our relationships policy and are in essence our Woodfield non-negotiables.  Pupils will be continually reminded in all settings that in order to be successful they must control Effort and Respect and be Ambitious in terms of the work they produce in class.  A pupil competition is currently underway across all settings to design our ERA logo with prizes for the winning designs.  All the logos produced will then be placed on our reward postcards home.  Keep an eye on the doormat to see the great designs our pupils have produced.

We have a staff training day on the 14th of May, taking place at Sidney Stringer Academy, where we will share the vision to develop an outstanding Woodfield curriculum with staff.  Correspondence with all stakeholders to inform you all of our plans will follow soon after that date.  All decisions made are informed by research and working with other ‘outstanding’ SEMH settings.  The smooth transition of our current Y6 to Y7 has been a major priority when formulating these plans and I look forward to sharing the plans and meeting with Y6 parents and pupils at a remote information meeting on Thursday 20th May. Details how to join this meeting will be distributed wb 17th May.

Tireless work to improve the Hawthorn Lane environment in conjunction with the local authority has been a constant since I took up this post.  We are relentlessly working to secure funding to make the most of the building at Hawthorn Lane before we make the move across to the Woodlands site.  More information will follow on this once we have secured funding.

The development of staff expertise in terms of teaching and learning but also in the specific elements of SEMH are continual weekly focuses across all the sites.  Staff have been challenged to raise the bar of expectation in every classroom at Woodfield.  Supporting our staff to become highly effective professionals through high quality professional learning will remain central to the school improvement journey.  Currently we are upscaling and sharing best practice in reading as we know this will unlock further potential in our young people.  This was also an area for development highlighted by Ofsted.

I would like to thank parents and carers for their ongoing support.  We will endeavour to create very strong relationships with all families and work together to support each other to deliver the very best outcome for each individual on roll at Woodfield.

Nico De Groot.
